We are a family of six running our small farm in North Anson, Maine. By small, we mean micro-dairy! We maintain a small, grass-fed herd of Normande cows and together, we take care of the soil and the grass to make rich, creamy milk. That milk is then deliciously transformed in Gelato! We also raise grass-fed beef, pastured laying hens for eggs, and our daughter enjoys her own small farm enterprise with her dairy sheep! The exact intent for the purpose of that sheep milk is still to be determined.
While we work to transition our cows to Organic, we steward both the land and the cows organically. We rotationally graze the cows, and fertilize our soil the old fashioned way - manure. We don’t use pesticides, herbicides, or artificial flavors and colors. Our gelato is made with natural ingredients - our flavors and ingredients are sourced seasonally from other local farms for a fresh and bold taste!
Our cows keep their calves at foot, raising them naturally for six months before weaning. While this does lower our production, we find that it grows a better calf. Our gelato also allows us to demand less milk from our cows, unlike liquid milk sales that rely on higher milk production.
The way that we farm certainly isn’t the only way to farm. It’s simply the best way for our farm, our soil, our cows, our family and our community.
